Grafton Morrish 2021

Old Millfieldian Golfing Society 2021

The OMGS team qualified for the Grafton Morrish, via winning the west region at a new venue of Royal Ashdown Forest GC scoring 93 points.

This year the travelled back to Hunstanton for the Grafton Morrish finals on the 1st– 3rd Oct eager to compete with the previous years event being cancelled due to COVID-19.

The team of Giles Legg, Adan Yates, David Gregory, Darryl McMahon, Nic Elliot, Phil White and Capt Toby Clifton-Holt.

With the team still keen to improve on previous year’s results and deliver the Grafton Trophy which has not been won by the OMGS since 1974.

The night before the team are in good spirits, and receiving key information from the virtually present Gavin Bradbury.

08.22 Friday morning the team are fed and watered ready to meet the tough opposition of Birkenhead, dubbed the paper view match according to the Grafton officials.

Gregory & McMahon leading the team out and taking early win with an excellent 6&5 win, Legg and Yates followed by Elliott and White both picking up halves to tough opposition to secure a 2-1 win and lead us into the second round.

After some light refreshments the team returned to play Nottingham in round 2.

This time we switched to have Legg and Yates lead in game 1 securing a tough 1up win down the last.

Game 2 of McMahon & Gregory unfortunately recorded a loss to Nottingham’s star pairing. All eyes fixed on the freshmen and chief Instagram officer White and Elliot. A new partnership that was blending well and delivered a strong 3&2 victory thus leading the OM’s to the next round on Saturday.

08.52 at Hunstanton brought Millfield and Bedford together. The game fought in good spirits and Millfield recorded a convincing 2 ½ – ½  victory with excellent golf performed by all.

The afternoon match of Sutton Valance and Millfield went out in what was going to be a very tough afternoon. The weather forecast delivered in Grafton fashion with heavy rain and strong winds making survival the principal purpose. The boys performed outstandingly with pairs 1 & 2 respectful recording halves leaving the work to be done in game 3. Elliott and White managed to battle through recording a 2-1 win, progressing Millfield to the semi finals on Saturday. Not before drying a lot of kit ready for the semi finals.

09.00 feeling refreshed and keen to end the 48 year hiatus from Grafton glory the team set off with McMahon & Gregory, Legg & Yates lastly White and Elliott the team recorded substantial wins 3&2, 8&6 and 6&5 respectfully.

So, we have been here before making the final in 2018 and narrowly missing out.

A back and fourth match with all three games of McMahon & Gregory, Legg & Yates lastly White and Elliott all going up at various points of time v Malvern.
Game 1 took the game to 18 1 up but after the opposition managed to holed on 18 walked away with a well fought half.

Game 2 also went down 18 1 up, but after looking in control Millfield lost the tee shot to end up losing the hole and finishing with a half.

All down to Game 3, a/s going down 18 after winning 16 to and halving 17.

A difficult lie in the semi left the second pin high right on a tight lie needing to travel around or over the greenside bunker.

The Malvern team missed further right, playing their 3rd to the heart of the green and about 20ft.

Nic played a classy pitch around the bunker using the contours to 12ft.

Malvern were unlucky with their putt and left it short.

Can Phil White the debutant hole the winning putt to secure the victory and end the 48 year wait for the Grafton trophy………. MILFIELD win the Grafton Morrish 2021, the crow go wild (well Millfield do anyway)

Needless to say there was much jubilation for finally entering the winners circle again.
